Moving to Raleigh, NC: A Checklist Before and After the Move

Moving to Raleigh takes more than finding a home and reserving a truck. Your housing dates, work trips, school enrollment and utility start dates need to fit together. Use this checklist to decide what to confirm before choosing an address, what to arrange before moving day and which paperwork to handle after you arrive.

Still deciding where to look? Our Raleigh relocation guide has neighborhood stops, property-address resources and a scouting checklist. This article focuses on getting the move organized.

Before choosing a home: set your move dates and budget

Write down when you need to be in the area, when you start work and when your current housing ends. If you are buying, ask your agent, lender and closing attorney which purchase dates are confirmed and what could still change. If you are renting, confirm the lease start and when the landlord will provide access.

Keep these four dates separate

  • Closing or lease start: when the purchase is scheduled to close or your rental term begins.
  • Access to the home: when you are allowed to get keys and move belongings inside. Ask the attorney or landlord to confirm.
  • Mover delivery: the agreed delivery date or window, which may differ from pickup.
  • Current housing ends: the last date you can stay in your present home.

Renting first can give you time to compare areas without making a purchase during one short visit. It also means paying for temporary housing and possibly storage and a second move. Compare those costs with buying before arrival; neither choice works for every move.

Keep purchase cash and moving money separate from recurring bills. If buying, ask the lender whether the estimated monthly mortgage payment includes property taxes and homeowners insurance. Add any taxes or insurance not included in that payment, along with HOA dues and utilities paid separately. Count each cost only once. If renting, ask which bills are separate from rent. Include transportation and any childcare you need in either budget. Add movers, deposits, setup charges and overlapping housing payments to a separate move budget. Use our Raleigh cost-of-living guide for the categories to investigate, then replace examples with quotes for your household and address.

Plan a Raleigh scouting visit around your daily trips

Give your agent the street address of each workplace, not just “RTP” or “downtown.” If two people commute, compare both trips from each home. Also check the places you expect to visit after work; a short office trip does not answer how the rest of the week will work.

  • Work: test your likely route at the hours you expect to travel, including parking and the walk to the building.
  • Everyday stops: visit the grocery store, park or other destination you would actually use from that address.
  • Walking or transit: walk the route to your destination or stop, and check current service hours and the return trip if you plan to use a bus.

Be specific about “walkable.” Walking to dinner, carrying groceries home and reaching a workplace without a car are different requirements. Use our Raleigh neighborhood guide and nearby-town comparison to make a short list, then investigate actual homes and routes.

Check school assignment before committing to an address

If public-school enrollment affects your move, identify the district serving the home. For addresses served by Wake County Public School System, use its base-school address lookup for the student's grade and intended school year. Check the calendar and transportation information, then confirm enrollment questions with the school or district.

A base-school assignment is not a guarantee of an available seat. WCPSS explains that students enrolling at a capped school may be assigned to an overflow school and placed on a waitlist. Start with the base-school enrollment process rather than assuming you can choose a different school.

Before signing housing documents, ask what proof of address is accepted, when you can enroll, and whether the expected calendar and start date fit your move. Use the district's current enrollment requirements for records and health forms. For a home outside WCPSS, contact the district serving that address.

Book movers with a plan for closing-date changes

For a move from another state, check the company in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's mover database. Confirm whether you are hiring the company transporting your belongings or a broker arranging the move; those roles differ. Federal registration is a check, not an endorsement. Moves entirely within one state have different rules.

Get a written estimate describing the services and charges. Ask about pickup and delivery windows, stairs or elevator access, storage, and the protection offered if belongings are lost or damaged. Keep the estimate, inventory and moving documents; FMCSA's moving tips explain what to review.

If your closing date moves, who needs a call?

Ask the mover about rescheduling or storage charges before booking. Keep contact details for the mover, current landlord, temporary lodging and utility providers together. If your housing date changes, confirm the new access date with your attorney or landlord before changing deliveries or ending your current housing.

Set up Raleigh utilities before moving day

Confirm the providers for the actual address and who is responsible for each account. Ask a rental manager whether water is billed through the property or requires your own account. For a purchase, confirm water and sewer or well and septic, electricity, gas if used, trash collection and internet availability.

If Raleigh Water serves the home, the city's start, stop and transfer instructions say to allow five business days to process a new-service request. Identity verification or other follow-up may be needed. That processing guidance is not a guarantee that service will be ready on your requested date.

  • Ask each provider about start dates, deposits, setup charges and any appointment you need.
  • Keep the confirmation and account number when the request is processed. If the start date is unclear, contact the provider before moving day.
  • Arrange internet installation early enough for your work needs; verify service at the address rather than relying on a neighborhood advertisement.
  • Schedule the end of service at your old home and provide a forwarding address for final bills.

Moving-day checklist: access, deliveries and documents

  • Confirm access: check the key handoff with the landlord or, for a purchase, your agent and attorney. Do not assume a scheduled signing time is permission to unload.
  • Confirm the delivery window: give the mover access and parking instructions, including any building or HOA arrangements you have verified.
  • Keep essentials with you: identification, medications, chargers, keys and the documents needed for housing, school or utility appointments.
  • Review the delivery inventory: note missing or damaged items through the mover's documented process. Keep copies.
  • Check services: confirm water and power are working and that the internet appointment is still scheduled. Contact the provider or property manager about a problem.

After the move: license, registration and mail

If you establish permanent residence in North Carolina and plan to drive, NCDMV's new-resident guidance says to get a North Carolina driver license within 60 days. Check the required documents and office arrangements early, and ask NCDMV whether your license type requires tests or other steps.

Vehicle title and registration are separate tasks, and the DMV guidance lists a registration deadline that can be earlier than 60 days. Ask NCDMV: “Given my move date, former state and employment date, when must I register this vehicle, and what documents do I need?” Do not assume every vehicle task can wait 60 days. Ask your insurer about the North Carolina coverage needed for the vehicle.

Use the official USPS change-of-address instructions to choose the appropriate forwarding request. Update your address directly with essential senders, including your employer, banks, insurers and healthcare providers. Send sensitive documents through the relevant organization's secure process.

Planning your visit or comparing homes now? Ask Raleigh Realty about your move. Send your visit dates, price range, work destinations and any property addresses you are considering. Include questions about showings, HOA fees, repair records or closing dates so the team can discuss what to investigate before you arrive.
