Compare home types, HOA costs, lake and greenway access, pool or club membership, and the trips you make most often. Use these ten communities to start your search, then compare specific homes.

These ten communities are a starting point, not a ranking or a complete Cary neighborhood directory.

How Cary fits together

Start with the places you go each day.

Use roads and entrances to get your bearings.

Amberly is at Cary’s western edge. Carpenter Village sits at the eastern edge of the historic Carpenter planning area, near the Morrisville-Carpenter Road and Davis Drive area. For Copperleaf, Green Hope School Road is the landmark to use for the neighborhood greenway entrance.

Put a home address and your work, shopping or other regular destinations on the same map. Try those trips before deciding which part of Cary works for you.

Compare the amenities you would use.

Preston, MacGregor Downs and Lochmere offer different club, lake and recreation settings. The sections below explain which association or club to contact about access. A nearby pool or golf course does not tell you what comes with a particular home.

Looking for Downtown Cary? It is outside this ten-community selection. Moving to Cary includes Downtown Cary Park and other places to visit.

Choose where to start

Compare access, fees and everyday use.

Pool or country club?

Start with Cary Park, Lochmere, Preston and MacGregor Downs. Check registration, membership and the charges for the activities you want.

Can you actually walk there?

Compare the walk from a home to shops, a trail entrance or an amenity in Stone Creek Village, Carpenter Village and Copperleaf. Look for sidewalks, crossings and an entrance you are allowed to use.

HOA rules or more than one fee?

Read the section-specific documents in Amberly, the alteration rules in Wellsley, and the pool requirements in The Park at West Lake.

01

Cary Park

A lake setting and swim-club options

Cary lists Cary Park Lake as privately maintained. The Cary Park Swim Club also has its own membership application, with resident and nonresident options.

On your visit

Walk from the home to the lake path you would use. Find an entrance you are allowed to use without crossing private property.

Before choosing a home

Ask the association and swim club which dues and pool charges apply to this address, and whether membership is available for the season you need.

02

Lochmere

Lakes, trails, pools and mixed home types

Lochmere’s association describes both single-family homes and townhomes in Glen Echo, along with lakes, trails and resident pools. It explicitly identifies Lochmere Golf Club as separate from the association.

On your visit

Compare a townhome and a detached home, then try the walk to the pool or trail you would use. Notice the stairs, garage access, outdoor space and condition of the exterior.

Before choosing a home

Request the master and any sub-association documents for the home. Ask who pays for the roof, siding and landscaping, and contact the golf club separately if golf matters to you.

03

Preston

Golf, tennis and other club membership choices

Prestonwood Country Club offers Full Golf, Tennis, Social and Dining membership categories. Treat club membership separately from the home and HOA; ask Prestonwood directly about current options and costs.

On your visit

Spend time on the home's street as well as at the club entrance. Look at yard privacy and any course-facing views, then try the drive to places you go regularly.

Before choosing a home

Get the home's association charges from the seller or manager. Ask Prestonwood directly for current initiation costs, recurring charges, availability and the activities included in the membership you want.

04

MacGregor Downs

A lake and country-club setting

The MacGregor Downs HOA identifies the community as adjacent to MacGregor Downs Country Club. The club describes itself as private and located on Lake MacGregor.

On your visit

For a home near the lake or course, inspect the actual lot lines, views and outdoor areas. Walk the driveway and yard rather than relying on a neighborhood photograph.

Before choosing a home

Request the survey, available repair records and current HOA documents. Obtain club membership terms separately; confirm any lake or dock rights for the property before relying on them.

05

Amberly

Multiple sections and amenity choices

Carolina Preserve’s community information describes Amberly as a master-planned community with multiple sections, including single-family homes and townhomes. It identifies Amberly Master facilities separately from Carolina Preserve’s own facilities.

On your visit

Start with the exact section and street on the listing. Compare the home's layout and exterior maintenance needs, then find the entrance to the amenities that property can use.

Before choosing a home

Ask for every association name and charge attached to the home. Have the manager confirm which facilities are included, what registration is required and which maintenance costs remain yours.

06

Stone Creek Village

Homes near the Stone Creek Village shops

The Stone Creek Village shopping center at 101 Ledgestone Way publishes its shop and dining directory. If walking there matters, try the walk from the specific home you are considering.

On your visit

Walk or drive from the home to the shops at a time you would go. Notice the crossings, sidewalks, parking and activity near the home's windows or outdoor space.

Before choosing a home

For an attached home, ask which exterior repairs the residential association covers. Get that association's name and documents from the seller; the shopping center's directory does not describe the home's dues or rules.

07

Carpenter Village

Lake surroundings and outdoor space

Cary identifies Carpenter Village Lake as privately maintained. Its lake guidance also states that the town does not maintain or dredge privately owned lakes and ponds.

On your visit

Compare the home's porch, yard and parking with the way you expect to use them. If lake access is part of the appeal, locate an authorized entrance and ask what use is permitted.

Before choosing a home

Ask the association about lake maintenance, current or approved special assessments, and the home's exterior-change rules. Check whether a separate townhome association also applies.

08

Copperleaf

A neighborhood greenway off Green Hope School Road

Cary’s Copperleaf Greenway page identifies an entrance at Green Hope School Road and describes a paved neighborhood trail. It distinguishes the existing trail from future connections.

On your visit

Start at the Green Hope School Road entrance, then see how you would reach it from the home. Walk the section you plan to use and note where it ends and any posted closures.

Before choosing a home

For a lot beside a trail or wooded area, request a survey showing easements and property lines. Ask the association about fence and tree-work approvals before planning yard changes.

09

The Park at West Lake

Pool and swim-team possibilities

The Park at West Lake Stingrays’ 2026 team information says pool-member households are eligible to join the swim team. Listings for The Park at West Lake appear under Apex on this site.

On your visit

Use the property's full address to plan your visit and confirm the municipality and services. The city name on a listing or search page does not answer those questions for every home.

Before choosing a home

Ask the association which pool access comes with the home and whether registration or additional charges apply. If the swim team matters, check its current requirements directly.

10

Wellsley

Outdoor space and plans for your home

Wellsley’s published architectural standards address exterior paint, fences, driveways and parking areas. They call for architectural review of proposed driveway changes and exterior color changes.

On your visit

Look closely at the driveway, fence, trees and exterior finishes of the home. List any changes you would want before deciding what to spend on improvements.

Before choosing a home

Request the current guidelines and any available approvals for existing alterations. Confirm your proposed changes with the association and check pool or tennis access separately.
